Developing an Architectural Studio Thesis Through the Desilo Principles.

Most architectural studio theses begin in remarkably similar ways. Students are asked to identify a building type, select a site, analyse users, review precedents, and formulate a design proposal. Some choose hospitals, others museums, transportation hubs, affordable housing, schools or community centres. They then proceed to gather data, identify problems, and optimise their chosen programme through increasingly sophisticated architectural interventions. This methodology has served architectural education for decades and has undoubtedly produced many competent architects. Yet it also conceals a deeper assumption that often goes unquestioned.

The assumption is that the problem has already been correctly defined. Before the student has even begun the research process, someone has already decided that the issue is fundamentally about healthcare, housing, transportation, education, or recreation. Architecture is therefore reduced to designing a better container for an already accepted programme. The student rarely pauses to ask whether the programme itself is merely a symptom of a much deeper fragmentation occurring within society.

The Desilo Principles* propose a fundamentally different starting point. Instead of asking, "What building should I design?", the student first asks, "What reality am I encountering? What exactly is taking place here?" Only after reality has been patiently observed and understood should architectural programmes and interventions begin to emerge. The building is therefore no longer the starting point of inquiry, but its eventual consequence.

Modern architectural education inherits an intellectual tradition that tends to divide reality into manageable categories. Transportation becomes a separate discipline from housing. Healthcare becomes detached from urban planning. Environmental sustainability becomes isolated from economics. Community development becomes separated from education. Each discipline develops its own literature, its own methods, its own experts and its own performance indicators. While such specialisation has generated extraordinary technical knowledge, it has also encouraged students to perceive reality through isolated compartments.

Many of the greatest challenges facing contemporary society, however, cannot be understood within these compartments. Urban loneliness is not simply a housing issue. Traffic congestion cannot be explained solely through transportation engineering. Declining public health is not merely a medical concern. Climate change cannot be reduced to environmental science alone. These problems arise because multiple systems interact with one another, producing consequences that no single discipline can adequately explain. When architectural education fragments reality into isolated subjects, it risks producing graduates who are exceptionally skilled at solving partial problems while overlooking the larger conditions that generated them.

A Desilo thesis therefore begins with observation rather than categorisation. Before deciding upon a building type, the student spends time observing how people actually live. Instead of immediately collecting measurable variables, the student attempts to understand relationships. How do families interact within a neighbourhood? Why do certain public spaces remain empty while others flourish? Why do elderly residents experience isolation despite living in densely populated communities? Why does a technologically advanced city often produce weaker social cohesion than a traditional village? These questions cannot be answered through checklists alone. They require patient observation, reflection, conversation and an openness to seeing connections that conventional methodologies often overlook.

Only after these relationships begin to reveal themselves should the architectural programme emerge. At this stage, the student should cultivate another intellectual habit that is often absent from conventional architectural education: the ability to question not merely the problem, but the structure of the problem itself. Every contemporary issue is framed by assumptions that originate from particular intellectual paradigms. A housing shortage, for example, may be presented primarily as an economic problem governed by market forces. Traffic congestion may be framed as an engineering problem requiring greater road capacity. Poor educational outcomes may be interpreted through pedagogical theories, while declining public health may be viewed largely through biomedical models. These frameworks are valuable, but they are not neutral. Each highlights certain aspects of reality while simultaneously obscuring others.

The Desilo approach therefore encourages students to ask a deeper series of questions. Why is this phenomenon understood in this particular way? What assumptions underpin the prevailing explanation? Is the problem fundamentally shaped by economic structures, technological systems, political institutions, dominant social science paradigms, or deeper cultural worldviews? More importantly, what relationships become invisible when the problem is framed through only one disciplinary lens?

This deeper inquiry may not always be necessary. Many architectural problems can indeed be addressed satisfactorily within existing institutional and disciplinary frameworks. However, when a problem appears persistently resistant to conventional solutions, students should consider the possibility that the difficulty lies not in the absence of better design, but in the structure of the prevailing paradigm (here, "structure" refers to the underlying assumptions, institutions and relationships that shape how the problem is understood and what solutions appear possible), through which the problem itself has been conceived. Questioning that structure often reveals hidden assumptions, systemic contradictions and overlooked relationships, opening possibilities that would otherwise remain invisible.

An Example: Designing An Elderly Care Centre

Let me give an example. Consider the increasingly common thesis topic of designing a hospice or elderly care centre. The conventional architectural approach begins with an accepted assumption: society needs a better hospice, and the architect's responsibility is to design one that is more humane, efficient and therapeutic. The student therefore studies precedents, healthcare standards, room layouts, accessibility requirements, therapeutic landscapes and operational workflows. While all these investigations are valuable, they also accept without question that institutional care is the appropriate response.

A Desilo approach suspends this assumption and instead asks why elderly care has become institutionalised in the first place. Is the growing demand for hospices simply the inevitable consequence of an ageing population, or is it also the result of broader economic, social and cultural transformations? How have urbanisation, longer commuting distances, dual-income households, declining multigenerational families, zoning practices, and changing patterns of employment reduced the ability of families to care for elderly relatives at home? Has modern society unintentionally fragmented family care into specialised institutions?

Once these wider relationships become visible, entirely different architectural possibilities begin to emerge. Instead of asking how to design a better hospice, the student may ask how architecture can enable elderly people to remain within their own homes and communities for much longer. Perhaps the need is not for a large permanent residential institution, but for a network of neighbourhood-based daytime care centres where elderly residents can socialise, receive rehabilitation, participate in meaningful activities and obtain basic medical supervision before returning home each evening. Families remain the primary caregivers while trained personnel provide daytime assistance, respite services, home visits and community outreach. Architecture now becomes one component within a broader ecosystem of care rather than the centrepiece of the solution.

The eventual architectural proposal may therefore be much smaller than originally imagined. Its significance lies not in accommodating more beds or providing more sophisticated facilities, but in supporting a fundamentally different philosophy of ageing—one that strengthens families, reinforces neighbourhood relationships and delays institutionalisation wherever possible. The design emerges not from improving the existing system, but from questioning whether the existing system should remain the dominant model at all.

This example illustrates one of the central propositions of the Desilo Principles. Architectural innovation does not always arise from designing better buildings. Sometimes it begins by questioning whether society has defined the problem correctly. When students learn to interrogate the paradigms underlying a design brief—whether they originate from healthcare systems, economic structures, technological assumptions or prevailing social policies—they often discover opportunities that remain invisible within conventional disciplinary boundaries. In this sense, architecture shifts from solving predefined problems to helping redefine the problems themselves.

This also transforms the role of architectural narrative. Many students struggle to write compelling thesis narratives because they begin with a predetermined building type. The introduction often becomes a justification for constructing yet another museum, library or transportation terminal. The resulting narrative feels procedural rather than meaningful. Within a Desilo framework, however, the narrative develops organically from the observed condition itself. The student tells the story of a fragmented reality. The thesis explains how this fragmentation emerged historically, how it manifests spatially, how it affects human experience, and why architecture possesses the capacity to restore relationships that have gradually been severed.

Research methods likewise assume a richer role. Site visits become opportunities to understand lived experience rather than exercises in recording measurable variables. Interviews seek stories instead of simply confirming hypotheses. Historical research investigates how present conditions evolved rather than merely documenting chronological events. Literature reviews become conversations across disciplines instead of collections of references confined within architectural journals. Knowledge itself becomes increasingly integrated as the student recognises that no single discipline possesses a complete explanation of complex human realities.

This approach does not reject technical rigour, quantitative analysis or professional standards. The Desilo Principles do not argue against environmental simulation, structural optimisation, user analysis or evidence-based design. On the contrary, these remain essential components of architectural education. The distinction lies in their position within the research process. Technical analysis becomes a means of understanding reality more deeply rather than the primary lens through which reality is perceived. Measurement serves wisdom rather than replacing it.

Ultimately, the success of an architectural thesis should not be evaluated solely by the elegance of its formal expression, the sophistication of its digital modelling or the completeness of its technical documentation. These qualities remain important, but they do not fully define architectural significance. A more profound measure asks whether the project successfully reconnects aspects of reality that modern society has unnecessarily separated. Does it restore relationships between people and place? Between work and daily life? Between education and community? Between ecology and economy? Between technology and humanity? Between knowledge and wisdom? If architecture can genuinely contribute to restoring these relationships, then it becomes more than the design of buildings. It becomes an act of epistemological healing.

Perhaps this is the greatest contribution that the Desilo Principles can make to architectural education. They invite students to postpone the temptation of immediate solutions and instead cultivate the discipline of seeing reality as an interconnected whole. Only when the whole has been understood should it be analysed into parts. And once the analysis is complete, those parts must once again be reunited into a coherent understanding. The architectural thesis therefore ceases to be merely a design exercise. It becomes a journey of learning how to perceive the world with greater depth, greater humility and greater wholeness. In an age increasingly defined by fragmentation, that may be the most important lesson architecture can offer.
